To the Editor,
In the operation room, once the patient is draped in a sterile manner various heavy cords such as defibrillator paddle cords and pacing cords are passed over the sterile drapes, and they have to be secured in such a manner so that they may not move around and get pulled back in the sterile surgical field across the ether screen.
The usual practice is to use an artery forceps, Kocher's forceps, or towel-holding forceps [Figure 1]. Many a time, this forceps, when placed at the top part of the screen, gets pulled across the screen into the sterile area, more so when the drapes are made of disposable paper-based single-use material. Sometimes, these forceps open up on their own resulting in the cords in the unsterile area to fall back in the sterile area.
Once working with the Velcros, I came up with the idea of using Velcro to use as a fastener in place of these forceps. A small rent is cut by a surgical blade in the drape, and the Velcro fastener is passed through it and tightened holding the heavy cords in place [Figure 2] and [Figure 3]. We have used this system for the last 6 months and it holds in a very secure manner and never gave trouble like slipping out and releasing the cords. Thus, it saved from the contamination of the sterile surgical field at all times.
