Dr. Rajaratinam Karnan Kalyan Singh, popularly known as RKKS among his colleagues, was the pioneer cardiac anesthesiologist of India. Many renowned cardiac anesthetists of today have been his students at some point of time. His immense wealth of knowledge, uncompromising quest for quality, unquenchable thirst for perfection, perseverance and punctuality allowed for himself a unique position in the history of Cardiac Anesthesia in India.

Dr. RKKS was born on 28 June 1937. He graduated from Madras Medical College and completed his diploma and post graduation from Christian Medical College, Vellore. He assumed charge as Chief Anesthesiologist at Southern Railway Hospital, Chennai, in the year 1962, where he continued his services for 25 years. With the advent of open cardiac surgery in 1975, Dr. Singh independently organized the cardiac operating suite infrastructure for major open cardiac surgical procedures to be performed under cardiac pulmonary bypass and performed the anesthetic management of the first ever successful coronary artery bypass in India. During the period 1975-1987, he managed an average of 800-1000 open cardiac surgeries annually, in addition to surgical procedures in other specialities. In 1987, he joined Madras Medical Mission and was instrumental in establishing The Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases as a specialty heart hospital of international standard. He started the 1-year Post Doctoral Course in Cardiac Anesthesia and Critical Care in the year 1994, followed by a 2-year Post Doctoral Fellowship Course in Cardiac Anesthesia in June 2001. From July 2001, he was the Medical Superintendent of Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, where, in addition to Anesthesia and Critical Care, he set up the Emergency and Trauma Care Services. Dr. RKKS was a source of inspiration for the faculty, junior doctors and students. He was an example to follow regarding patient care and management. He maintained his knowledge at par with the recent developments in medical science and technology. Above all, he had compassion for the poor and needy at all times. His memories have left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 2003. He continued to work day and night until his retirement from service in 2008. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

May his soul rest in peace and God give his family and friends the strength to bear the irreplaceable loss!
